Master Thesis - Celestial-Inertial Sensor Fusion for Autonomous UAV Navigation (m/f/d)
Full-time
Saalburg-Ebersdorf | Jena
Software Engineering
Introductory information
This thesis investigates autonomous localization and orientation estimation for UAVs using celestial-inertial sensor fusion. The work combines star tracker measurements with inertial sensor data to improve navigation robustness and accuracy.
The goal is to develop and evaluate sensor fusion methods for safety-relevant autonomous applications. The thesis combines practical system implementation with research-oriented evaluation of celestial-inertial navigation methods.
Your Role
Develop and evaluate algorithms that combine star tracker and IMU data for accurate orientation estimation.
Implement sensor fusion methods, such as an Extended or Unscented Kalman Filter.
Analyze orientation accuracy, drift behavior, and robustness.
Validate the approach using simulated data, recorded sensor data, or UAV prototype experiments.
Collaborate with the engineering team to integrate and test the developed methods.
At a minimum we’d like you to have
Good programming skills in Python and basic experience with C/C++.
Interest in robotics, sensor fusion, and embedded systems.
Familiarity with Linux-based development environments.
It’s preferred if you have
Basic understanding of inertial sensors or sensor fusion techniques.
Interest in applying theoretical concepts within autonomous systems.
Motivation to work with real or simulated sensor data.
